about

The American artist Peter Halley stood out as a central figure in the Neo- Conceptualist movement of the 1980s and is known for his Day-Glo flat abstract paintings that emphasize colors and systems. Halley graduated in 1975 from Yale University (New Haven, United States) with a degree in art history. After Yale, he moved to New Orleans, where he received an MFA in painting from New Orleans University in 1978.

His paintings employ the language of geometric abstraction to explore the organization of social space in the digital era. Since the 1990’s, Halley has also worked extensively with wall-sized digital prints and low-relief sculpture which, along with his paintings, have been combined in site-specific installations. In an era increasingly dominated by digital technology and social media, Halley’s influence has been widely recognized. Also celebrated for his critical writings, in which he relates theoretical work to the digital revolution and the visual arts, Halley publishes the influential Index Magazine from 1996 to 2005.

He served as Director of Graduate Studies in Painting and Printmaking at the Yale University School of Art from 2002 to 2011.
