With a rich trajectory of more than 40 years, Bob Wolfenson established himself as one of the most important names in Brazilian photography. He lived for a year in New York in the 1980s, where he worked as an assistant to American photographer Bill King. Upon returning to Brazil, he began a completely authorial photographic practice that from the very beginning was permeated with an expressiveness characteristic of his restless personality. His provocative compositions have established themselves in the field of fashion and in documentary photography, the latter encompassing portraits of famous personalities as well as unknown people, always under a cinematic perspective. Childhood memories, as well as devastated and melancholic environments, have also been the themes of series and publications.
He was awarded the Photographer of the Year Award in the Art category by Funarte - National Art Foundation of the Ministry of Culture in 1995 and in 2013 he was one of the winners of Prêmio Fundação Conrado Wessel de Arte. Wolfenson’s solo exhibitions in Brazil include Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil (1996), Galeria Millan, São Paulo, Brazil (2007, 2013 and 2017), Centro Universitário Maria Antonia, São Paulo, Brazil (2010), Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia, Salvador, Brazil(2009) and at Museu de Arte Brasileira da Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado, São Paulo, Brazil (2004). In 2020, in partnership with Galeria Millan, he carried out an intervention in the urban space based on the work Nósoutros, a six-handed projection by Helena, Isabel and Bob Wolfenson.
He has participated in several group exhibitions including: Moda no Brasil por Brasileiros, Bienal Pavilion, São Paulo, Brazil (2002), Amor e ódio à Lygia Clark, Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland (2013), Bom Retiro e Luz: Um Roteiro 1976-2011, Centro da Cultura Judaica, São Paulo, Brazil (2011), MAM - clube dos colecionadores de fotografia, Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, Brazil (2006), among others. The books he has published include: Jardim da Luz (Editora DBA/Companhia das Letras, 1996), Antifachada - Encadernação Dourada (Cosacnaify, 2004), Cinépolis (Schoeler, 2009), Apreensões (Cosacnaify, 2010), Belvedere (Galeria Millan, 2012) and Sub/Emerso (Ipsis, 2020). His work is featured in important collections such as São Paulo Art Museum (Coleção Pirelli-MASP) and Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, Brazil.
